THE HISTORICAL LANGUAGE MOVEMENT OF BANGLADESH
In 1952 , there was a movement in Dhaka city. From the history it has been known as our language movement. It is very special to us. Besides, it plays a significant role to represents our nationalism to the world. But it has something exceptional because many countries in the world has their own history of liberation war and gaining freedom and a lot of tales of sacrifices as well as us. But no other country has the history of language movement like we have.
Most of the people think that 1952, was the time when the struggling period started. But the concern is wrong, it was started long ago, right after the division of India and Pakistan. On the first meeting of the parliament of Pakistan 1947, Dhirendranath datta proposed the governor on that time to establish Bangla as one of the state language of Pakistan. But the governor refused his proposal where as the three-third people of Pakistan belongs to East Pakistan(present Bangladesh). It was the first time when the rulars has been created an issue with the people of East Pakistan.
Then, on a convocation ceremony of the University of Dhaka Khaza Najimuddin governor of Pakistan declared Urdu as the only state language of Pakistan. The students protested against the declaration. From that day the movement started it lasted on 21st February, 1952 when a lot of people died by the cross fire of state police. It was the first time for any nation who gave their lives for their mother language. Finally, the government of Pakistan declared Bangla as one of the state language of Pakistan in 1956.
Every year, we celebrate 21st February as our mother language day and 1996 UNESCO honored this day as International mother language day.
